Mindful Self-Compassion During Difficult Times
Sundays in January, 7 – 8pm EST (January 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31)
The challenges we are currently facing can be overwhelming and disorienting, especially in a culture that has conditioned us to constantly gain, achieve, and produce. The fear and discomfort of “social distancing” or being “isolated with others” for too long can be quite unnerving as we all adjust to what the new “normal” looks and feels like. For many, the sudden pause is causing some severe discomfort, fear, boredom, guilt, and loneliness. By responding in this way, an authentic dynamic flow of who we really are, along with our unique interconnectedness, gets blocked. This is the perfect moment to lean into the pause, step back and gain a broader, healthier perspective. By incorporating practices of mindfulness and self-compassion, these classes explore a path for moving through these less than comfortable experiences to a deeper and more positive transformation overall. Open to all levels.

Transforming Anxiety, Depression and Other Difficult Emotions
January 9, 10am – 12noon & 2 – 4pm EST
The desire for happiness serves as a major motivation in our lives, yet we often experience numerous obstacles to achieving it. With the pandemic, political discord, and an uncertain future, many of us have experienced heightened anxiety and anger. Yet even with beneficial circumstances and material comforts, it is quite easy to experience frustration, fear, depression and other less-than-generous mind states. While we all search for happiness, we often unwittingly create the causes for our suffering and dissatisfaction. As said by Shantideva, the 8th century Buddhist master, we long to free ourselves from misery but wind up running to it instead. Perhaps we find comfort in food, vent our frustrations out on others, or distract ourselves with entertainment. But without addressing the true source of difficulty, which resides in the mind, we will never find the happiness and peace we seek. This daylong workshop will help us identify afflictive states of mind (anger, attachment, pride, jealousy, depression, anxiety, fear, etc.) and explore a variety of healthy coping mechanisms. We will learn how to cultivate positive emotions and transform even everyday challenges into more realistic and peaceful experiences. This workshop is appropriate for beginners as well as for more experienced students who encounter negative emotions and wish to strengthen the capacity to overcome them.

Thursday, May 20 at 7pm EDT
Cittamani Tara, the highest yoga tantra manifestation of the deity Tara, can lead us to liberation and enlightenment within a single lifetime. Tara, a female personification of the enlightened mind, is known as Tara the Liberator, an embodiment of enlightened activity, and mother of all the buddhas. On this ultimate level, she manifests perfect wisdom. Cittamani Tara Puja is a practice that invokes Cittamani Tara, well-known as a source of swift assistance in all temporal and spiritual matters. She is called upon to bring success – including for situations involving family, relationships, business, and career – and for protection from all negativities and fears. She is also invoked in times of emergency, personal distress and difficulty, health problems, for the quick removal of obstacles, and when rapid wisdom is needed. The Cittamani Tara Puja includes four mandala offerings, fourfold offerings including flowers, optional prostrations, and a twofold recitation of the Praises to the 21 Taras. This puja is a powerful support for our Dharma practice and achieving our temporal and ultimate goals. Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche has specifically advised that the Cittamani Tara Puja be practiced by Shantideva Center.

While we generally think of death as an anxiety-producing experience of loss, it can also be a time of great opportunity if we have trained our minds. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has commented that it is possible to die with joy, without fear, and without regret. In this 5-session series, Venerable Amy will help us prepare for this important time of transition and teach us how we can train our minds for a more peaceful and happy death. She will also help understand what happens at the time of death, how we can utilize thought transformation (lojong) and other techniques, how mantras and prayers can be helpful, and how to help others who are passing away.

Buddhism in a Nutshell
Tuesdays May (11, 18, 25) and June (1, 8, 15), 6:30 – 8pm EDT
Buddhism in a Nutshell is an introductory course that provides a general overview of basic Buddhist philosophy and principles for complete beginners and is intended to provide a basis for more extensive study about Buddhism. It does not assume that those who participate in this course know anything at all about Buddhism or about meditation, but simply that there is an interest in learning something about Buddhism in its various forms and that a presentation in a Tibetan Mahayana context is appealing. However, the materials covered in this course should not be considered the property of beginners alone; the teachings offered here are profound and will be of benefit to even advanced students on the path to enlightenment.

Imagining the Positive
May 22, 1 – 2:30pm EDT
Life today can be very overwhelming due to the pandemic’s manifestation on our planet. The uncertainty and suffering causes depression, anxiety, and other negative experiences. Is this daily dose of dissatisfaction our choosing or is there an alternative way of thinking and being? And why is it that we often choose to manifest something other than our full potential? Due to our familiarity of living lesser lives, we often experience an inner desolation. In this workshop, we will use this dissatisfaction to fuel a process of dismantling the safety net of limited thinking and reassemble a more positive mindset. It is from this more positive framework, that we can create more inner happiness and, therefore, healthier and more compassionate connections with ourselves and others. Open to all levels.
